Medicare has different pieces. We’ll help you understand how they can fit together for you.
Get the dates in writing.
Ask your benefits team when your current coverage ends. Your last day at work and your last day of coverage may differ. Keep the coverage-loss notice and find out when any next employer’s benefits begin.
Compare the available routes.
Depending on your situation, choices may include a Marketplace plan, a spouse’s employer plan, or COBRA continuation. Compare premiums, provider networks, prescriptions, and the timing of each choice. COBRA can involve paying the full plan cost plus an administrative fee.
Don’t leave the deadline to the last week.
Loss of qualifying job-based coverage generally gives you 60 days before or after the loss to enroll in Marketplace coverage. Confirm the exact rules and start date with the marketplace for your state. Choosing a plan and having active coverage are separate steps.
